We typically practice this punch from a shiko dachi, not sanchin.

This is a close punch with the fist, palm stays facing up, delivered in close range to opponent.

In goju the horizontal punch is practiced where the elbow never extends beyond one “fist distance” off the ribs, remaining palm up throughout.

The face-up fist can also be used as an upward punch (similar to the boxing upper cut).
