Lessons from a White Belt

I started my lessons in Goju-Ryu Karate-Do with my Dad during lockdown for COVID-19. He’s also my sensei. As a requirement of teaching me, we had to set a routine and stick to it. And this is just one of the lessons from a white belt that you can apply to your training.

With this new routine, I expected perfection from myself but never attained it. I thought it would be easy but it wasn’t. At least, not at first. It was like learning a new language, and it was all Greek to me.

In order to improve, I had to stop getting down on myself and continue training without negative emotions. I brought more to the practice when I left those emotions at the door.

I learned then that my mind was crucial to the practice but what was more critical was to free it by letting it focus on what was most important.

This fostered much more desire for the martial arts in me and can do the same for you.

Once I got my head out of the way, these are some of the lessons I learned that you may find helpful in your training.

Tips for white belts

The first is respect. The hardest for someone to have if you do not have respect for yourself. A good start to respecting oneself is by making a schedule for training and keeping to it!

The second is self-discipline. This comes naturally when it has been practiced by keeping your attention on your practice at home. And this discipline is what will allow you to make the most out of what is given by Gojuathome and by yourself.

The third is that you are here to learn. And learning can be tough, especially when done at home by yourself. But with the resources gathered here you too can see who you are about to become. Who knows, maybe you will become better than those that are giving instruction in the tutorials

You will learn all of these yourself in time, but soon you shall understand here at GojuatHome.com that the effort you put in is the effort you give yourself. What better gift can you give yourself than a strong body and mind.

I hope to see you training with us!

Everything you want to be is waiting to be unlocked inside you. You just have to bring the energy, effort and dedication to make it so.
